Studious Update

Image

First off let me apologize for not updating this blog in a while. No excuses. As most of my friends know, along with Studious, I also run Word of Mouth Shirts. Word of Mouth is a blog all about independent brand tees, along with some other random things at times. I recently launched the blog as a brand and things have been going really well, even better than I planned. So considering that along with a few other things, I won’t get detailed, I have decided to put Studious on hold for the time being.

I will still be brainstorming, researching and designing as I have the brand on hold. I don’t know when I will relaunch, but I will not rush it. I am very glad to have had this experience and will use everything I have learned, and will learn, for the relaunch. A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported Studious in any way, this is not the end, just a break. I will get things prepared for a bigger and better launch in the future.

So now for the good news: I have marked ALL remaining Studious tees down to 9 bucks! Shipping is only 2 bucks and all tees come with Studious stickers. Since things have gone this way, I have decided not to reprint any of the original designs. I was originally planning to reprint these designs in a new color way, now this will be the only time these will be available. Sizes are very limited so grab yours before they are gone forever!

Failure Is The Best Teacher

So I received some disappointing news this past week. Not bad news, I was just disappointed.

I just finished up another semester of school and took a 3D design class. Well one of my projects was being considered as one of seven to represent the school in a nationwide contest. Needless to say I was very excited about this possible opportunity. I always let my imagination get the best of me. I figured, being that they asked me to participate, surely I would be picked. Right?

Well the email came in this week that read:

Bobby,
Thank you very much for agreeing to submit your work for consideration for the League For Innovation Competition. While the work was well received, ultimately it was not selected for inclusion in the exhibition.
You may pick up your work by contacting David Kxxxxx, the gallery coordinator at dkxxx@xxxxx.edu.
Again, great work, have a wonderful winter break!
Man.
Like I said, I was disappointed. But I only let myself be down about it for about an hour. After that, I moved on. I am proud to have my work noticed by these professors that I respect so much. I will take this as a lesson learned and apply my knowledge to my next project. I heard someone say, “good or bad, you gotta move on from project to project. never dwell on one piece of work.”
Even though I was disappointed I am not gonna let this fester. Failure is the best teacher and my next project, personal or for school, is gonna be NUTS!

Inspiration behind the Relax Tee

By far the tee that has people confused is the Relax tee, so here is a quick breakdown:

I am very STUDIOUS when listening to music. The inspiration behind the “Relax tee” is a rap line by The Notorious BIG from the song “Dead Wrong” off of the Born Again CD. It is the very first line, from the first verse of the song.

“Relax & take notes/ While I take tokes of the marijuana smoke..”

No, this isn’t my all time favorite song from Biggie, I am huge fan of his music, but I always thought it was a awesome way to start a verse. I have certain friends, and family including my brother, that are always down to talk about rap lines other people may have missed. We have been doing this as long as I can remember. Still to this day it’s: “did you hear that new…. Did you catch that line about…?” We love talking rap lyrics and trying to catch something the other missed. I am by far the most STUDIOUS when it comes to rap lyrics, they might tell you otherwise.

For this tee, I wanted to pay respect to BIG but in a subtle way, where only the real hip hop heads would get it. The studious ones so to speak. So if you saw this tee and immediately started to recite the rest of the lyrics, this tee is for you. I hope you like the design enough to wear it proudly. I have found it to be a great conversation starter. The letters are eye-catching enough to get people to ask “what does your shirt say?” For the people that don’t get it, I get the opportunity to talk rap lyrics with them. If only for a few seconds. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes I get the deer in the headlights look. Either way its cool. I wish everyone was as studious as me.. haha

How did you come up with Studious?

My younger cousin asked me the other day, while I was back home for Thanksgiving:

“How did you come up with that?”

“With Studious?”

“yea”

I didn’t know what to say. She put me on the spot. I said:

“Well, I did a lot of research and then came up with something that represented me in a way I felt that would relate to other people as well.”

Well I said something like that. Really I went through about 4 brand names and ideas that, at one point or another, I was absolutely convinced would work. Now I think about the ideas I had and wow! I am so glad I didn’t pull the trigger on the name “Name Brand” haha. Not that Studious is this fail proof almighty name, but I love it. Every time I here someone else say it I light up. Thats how I know its right for me.

I put a lot of thought into the name and direction of the brand. I went back and forth with a few characters that I created. But in the end, that was me trying to be something I am not.

My whole life I’ve LOVED drawing names and letters. I remember being in 6th grade the first day of art class, the teacher said “draw what you are interested in” I knew immediately I was going to draw my last name. I loved drawing letters and I could draw my last name in all sorts of different ways. Right before I started she said “NO WORDS!”

No words?! Why not? I raised my hand: “Why not?” She said to express my self through images. Ok, I also knew how to draw a cross in 3D. Surely she wouldn’t hate on Jesus right? I finished my 3D cross and she stops by, “No religious images either” Wow! I was so frustrated.

Later in high school a very similar thing happened. We were to create a image that represented us. I immediately started doing my name in these graffiti letters I had been working on. “NO WORDS!” Aint this a bitch, not again. I didn’t even do the project. I was crazy in high school. Those were the only two art classes I had ever taken. But I would draw all the time.

So without knowing, those two episodes shaped my thoughts of my own art work. “For some reason, drawing names, graffiti or whatever, isn’t a good skill to have” I never really took myself serious after that. I knew I was good at drawing, but never really thought I would do anything with it.

A few years ago I went back to school, I am about done with all my basics and I have begun taking art classes. I am majoring in Graphic Design. I have learned so much, meet so many people and overall I just have this new sense of confidence and self awareness. I have spent this past year researching, networking and blogging about what I love. I plan on doing exactly what I love for the rest of my life. Whether I keep my day job and design on the side or I am blessed to one day be a full time artist, I will always take myself serious and always do what I love.

So next time Sereya asks me “how did you come up with Studious” I am going to say “by doing what I love!”
